The Story of Taylor Guitars

Bob Taylor has been fascinated by guitars since his youth, and at the age of 16 he built his first dreadnought guitar. At the age of 18, Bob Taylor began working at American Dream, a music store. When the company owner decided to sell the company in 1974, Bob Taylor, Kurt Listug and Steve Schemmer bought it, laying the foundation for what would later become Taylor Guitars in Lemon Grove, California. Initially the company was renamed Westland Music Company, but a shorter name was needed due to the size of the instrument headstock logo. It was therefore decided to call the company Taylor , especially since Bob Taylor was the actual guitar maker. Listug took over financial and managerial matters, while Taylor was responsible for design and production. In 1976, the company decided to expand and make its guitars available to other retailers.

Bob Taylor focused on building acoustic guitars, combining high-quality materials and fine woods with precision craftsmanship. The new Taylor Guitars brand was soon recognized as a manufacturer of instruments with exceptionally good sound and playing characteristics. Added to this is the use of innovative manufacturing techniques and special design features, such as the patented Taylor neck. Special pickup systems made the products very popular with hobby musicians and professional artists, especially for live performance. In 1983 Steve Schemmer left the company.

Today, Taylor Guitars is one of the leading guitar manufacturers with over 900 employees. The instruments are sold internationally in almost 70 countries, including through an in-house logistics center in the Netherlands.
