The first question is the type of amp. The most popular are undoubtedly those that use vacuum tubes to amplification the signal. In contrast to the linear amplification of a transistor amplifier , a tube amplifier produces gentle distortion and thus harmonic overtones quite early on. These sound properties are often perceived as a basic characteristic of the sounds of an electric guitar. A transistor amplifier, on the other hand, is able to produce maximum clear clean sounds and very direct, harsh distortion. There are also so-called hybrid amplifier that combine a tube preamplifier with a transistor amplifier in order to accommodate the desired tube characteristics in a smaller, mobile format - very suitable for quieter operation at home.
When it comes to distortion, a distinction is often made between the direct British sound , as known from Marshall , Friedman , Blackstar or Orange , and the dense, American sound , for example found in Mesa/Boogie or Bogner . These different characteristics are mainly attributed to the use of different types of power amp valves such as EL34 and 6L6. Fender amps are valued for their clear sound with low distortion.
Another type of electric guitar amp that is becoming more and more popular is the modeling amp . Here the sound of the amplifier is digitally emulated. A modeling amplifier often provides various simulations of well-known and popular amps. In addition to long-standing manufacturers in the field of modeling, such as Line 6 or Roland , the Kemper Amp has recently impressively illustrated the possibilities of modern technology. With the help of frequency measurement, this is able to make an exact impression of other amplifier and has already made some experienced guitarists shake their heads in blind comparisons.
On the technical side, once you have decided on a type of amplifier and the power in watts that determines its volume, it is time to consider the design. Here you have to choose between a top part or a combo . As the word combo suggests, the amplifier unit and the loudspeaker( s) are located in the same enclosure. An amplifier top contains only the preamplifier and amplifier of the amplifier and, in order to be operated, must be connected to a box specifically designed for guitar amps. It is also possible to buy a guitar preamplifier , i.e. just the preamplifier, and operate it with a amplifier of your own choice.
