Universal Audio
Pioneer in audio recording for more than 50 years
Founded in 1958 by Bill Putnam Sr., Universal Audio has long been synonymous with innovative recording equipment. As the favourite engineer of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and others, Bill was a passionate innovator who is regarded as the father of modern audio recording. Many of his legendary studio and equipment designs are still used today. B. Putnam was the inventor of the modern mixing console, the multiband audio equaliser and he was the first engineer to use artificial reverb in commercial recordings. Alongside his friend Les Paul, Bill was also involved in the early development of stereophonic recording.
Known as a driven entrepreneur, Putnam founded three audio product companies during his long career: Universal Audio, Studio Electronics and Urei. All three companies produced gear that, after its introduction, became widespread and helped to shape the studio sound for generations. The boutique compressors LA-2A and 1176 and the 610 tube console are among these legends. With the 610 mixing console, artists such as Sinatra, the Beach Boys and Van Halen recorded their studio albums.
Universal Audio was re-established in 1999 by Bill's sons James Putnam and Bill Putnam Jr. The plan was twofold: on the one hand to faithfully reproduce the classic analogue recording devices in the tradition of their father; and on the other to bring the sound and spirit of vintage analogue technology into the new digital recording tools.
From Apollo to Satellite
Today the Apollo Audio-Interfaces and the Satellite DSP audio systems are indispensable in studios and in home recording. High-quality converters and powerful DSP chips take over the processing for the specially developed audio plug‑ins. The award-winning UAD Powered PlugIns are world famous and new ones are being added all the time! To achieve the most authentic analogue sound for the emulation plug‑ins, the DSP gurus collaborate with the original hardware manufacturers. With exact circuit diagrams and their experienced ears they give the UAD PlugIns warmth and harmonics, recreating the analogue originals in as much detail as possible. Where UA products were once mainly compatible with Apple Macs because of their FireWire interface, USB variants for PC systems are now also available.
Apollo Desktop
The Apollo Twin DUO (USB), X and X Quad are the compact desktop models for direct access and a large control dial. The two Unison microphone preamps with their digital recreations of classic transformer and tube preamps guarantee excellent audio quality already at the recording stage. The Core Processing ensures near‑zero-latency audio recording! The plug‑in emulations of classic tape machines, compressors, EQs and legendary amplifier models leave nothing to be desired in terms of sound design. The number of built‑in DSP chips varies depending on the product designation. For mobile music producers there's the compact, bus‑powered Arrow Interface.
The Apollo x4 offers four of the high‑end Unison microphone preamps in the familiar layout. In addition to two extra line‑outs, a second Hi‑Z instrument input and another headphone output round off the Thunderbolt 3 audio interface.
Rack models
With the space-saving 19‑inch units, such as the Apollo x6, x8, x16 and Quad Fireface, multiple devices can be cascaded and neatly mounted in a rack. Depending on requirements, these 1U model variants offer very different inputs and outputs.
PCIe and Satellite: If the computer has a PCIe slot, the Octo Core products can significantly increase the studio computer's performance. The Sharc DSP chip type handles the processing here.
If you only want DSP power and not an interface, the Satellite audio systems are the right choice. The individual Thunderbolt peripherals can be chained for even more power or combined with other models. By the way: the Universal Audio DSP solutions include selected UAD-2 PlugIns. That means you can start straight away with a small selection of effects. If that's not enough, you can choose from a generous range of processors and expand your collection at any time.
Outboard Equipment
Looking for classic outboard gear? In addition to the legends already mentioned, names such as Solo 610, LA-610, 6176 and 4-710d come up. The OX Box is also very popular — an all‑in‑one wonder box for guitar recordings. Loadbox, cabinet, microphone and room simulation — all in one compact desktop interface with exceptional sound — definitely give it a try!
