About Gibson SG

The Gibson SG was originally designed as an upgrade for the Les Paul, which was failing in the early 1960s, and was even brought onto the market in 1961 as the Gibson Les Paul SG. However, in 1968, Gibson began producing the Les Paul again and the Les Paul SG name was shortened to SG. The SG's design was intended to help Gibson break away from the image as a conservative jazz luthier. The first thing you notice about the design of the SG guitars is the double-cut body shape with two horns. This should give the guitars a modern look but at the same time improve the playability of the high frets . The design was so controversial at the time that it was one of the reasons for the divorce of Gibson and Lester William Polfus, the namesake of the Les Paul.

Today there are many different branches in the Gibson SG family with different features. The entry into the SG series is the SG Junior. This has a mahogany body and neck and a rosewood fretboard . The Junior's electronics are formed by a P-90 Dog Ear bridge pickup .

This is followed by the Special, which has an additional P-90 pickup in the neck position . Above the Special is the Standard, where better and, depending on the model , different pickups are used. Of course, there are also custom SG guitars and models from the Murphy Lab that impress with unique finishes and features.

About Gibson

The US Gibson Guitar Corporation, founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was initially known for production mandolins and banjos. Today the company's headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee and Gibson is one of the world's most well-known and renowned manufacturers of electric guitars.

The Les Paul model , named after its creator Lester William Polsfuss, is one of the most famous and best-selling electric guitar shapes of all time and founded the design of the single cut guitar, which has been copied, adopted and reinterpreted by numerous other manufacturers. The Les Paul is primarily valued for its warm and powerful sound . The humbucker pickup responsible for this, in its common design today, was also developed by Seth Lover at Gibson .

At the beginning of the 1960s, another solid body electric guitar from Gibson appeared, the Gibson SG . Initially intended as a successor to the Les Paul, it became another icon of rock history, thanks in part to Angus Young from AC/DC, and is the basis for the double cut guitar type .

With the Flying V and the Explorer , Gibson is responsible for two body shapes that were far ahead of their time at the time of their release in the late 1950s, but which also achieved legendary status over the years. To this day they also serve as the basis for a variety of heavy guitars , for example from manufacturers such as Jackson or ESP.

The Gibson custom shop produces commissioned work , high-quality one-off pieces and exact replicas of famous models and legendary vintages of their instruments. These are often subjected to an artificial aging process called relicing.

Acoustic guitars have also been produced for almost as long as the company has existed. The J-45 , the Hummingbird , the L-00 and the SJ-200 are among the most popular acoustic guitars in the world and were the instrument of choice for Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

In addition to the instruments already mentioned, you can of course also buy picks , bags and cases or merchandise from Gibson from us.

We are particularly proud to have a Gibson flagship store in our Frankfurt branch. There you will not only find a large selection and exclusive models to try out directly, but you will also benefit from the expertise of our Gibson -trained and certified employees when it comes to advice on the perfect guitar.
