The Gibson Dave Mustaine Flying V EXP in detail

About the artist

Dave Mustaine played guitar as a teenager and was a member of the band Panic . He left in 1981 because he accepted an offer from the newly founded band Metallica to play as a guitarist alongside Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield and bassist Ron McGovney. In 1983, shortly before the release of Metallica 's first album, he was fired due to alcohol problems and personal differences with his band members. Mustaine then formed the metal band Megadeth with David Ellefson. Megadeth consisted of Marty Friedman on guitar, Nick Menza on drums and Dave Ellefson on bass, Mustaine was guitarist and singer. With this formation, Megadeth experienced their peak between 1992 and 1995 with the albums Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia . From 1996 Mustaine played alongside Megadeth in the project MD.45 with Lee Ving from the LA punk band Fear .
In 2017, Mustaine won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the Megadeth song Dystopia along with Kiko Loureiro, Dave Ellefson and Chris Adler.

About Gibson Flying V

At the end of the 1950s, Gibson wanted to modernize and improve its somewhat outdated, conservative image. No guitar embodies this better than the Flying V.

The Flying V was first introduced in 1958, but only sold a few units in the first few years, so production stopped in 1962. However, the guitar's popularity increased significantly in the mid-1960s after some well-known musicians played the Flying V. These included, for example, Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. Due to increasing demand, Gibson began production again in 1967. Ever since the successful days of hard rock and heavy metal in the 1970s and 80s, the Flying V has been an absolute icon of rock music.

A mahogany body with a mahogany neck is normally used in the construction / acoustic of the Flying V, but there are also models in which other woods are used. When it comes to electronics, similar to woods, there are model-based differences. A Flying V is always equipped with two humbuckers, which are controlled via three controls and a 3-way switches .

Top features:

  • Unique, iconic design
  • Double humbucker layout
  • Mahogany body
About Gibson

The US Gibson Guitar Corporation, founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was initially known for production mandolins and banjos. Today the company's headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee and Gibson is one of the world's most well-known and renowned manufacturers of electric guitars.

The Les Paul model , named after its creator Lester William Polsfuss, is one of the most famous and best-selling electric guitar shapes of all time and founded the design of the single cut guitar, which has been copied, adopted and reinterpreted by numerous other manufacturers. The Les Paul is primarily valued for its warm and powerful sound . The humbucker pickup responsible for this, in its common design today, was also developed by Seth Lover at Gibson .

At the beginning of the 1960s, another solid body electric guitar from Gibson appeared, the Gibson SG . Initially intended as a successor to the Les Paul, it became another icon of rock history, thanks in part to Angus Young from AC/DC, and is the basis for the double cut guitar type .

With the Flying V and the Explorer , Gibson is responsible for two body shapes that were far ahead of their time at the time of their release in the late 1950s, but which also achieved legendary status over the years. To this day they also serve as the basis for a variety of heavy guitars , for example from manufacturers such as Jackson or ESP.

The Gibson custom shop produces commissioned work , high-quality one-off pieces and exact replicas of famous models and legendary vintages of their instruments. These are often subjected to an artificial aging process called relicing.

Acoustic guitars have also been produced for almost as long as the company has existed. The J-45 , the Hummingbird , the L-00 and the SJ-200 are among the most popular acoustic guitars in the world and were the instrument of choice for Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

In addition to the instruments already mentioned, you can of course also buy picks , bags and cases or merchandise from Gibson from us.

We are particularly proud to have a Gibson flagship store in our Frankfurt branch. There you will not only find a large selection and exclusive models to try out directly, but you will also benefit from the expertise of our Gibson -trained and certified employees when it comes to advice on the perfect guitar.
