Started by Eddie Van Halen , who built the “ Frankenstrat ”, a guitar exactly to his needs, companies like Charvel and Jackson soon emerged, which distinguished themselves through the production of so-called Superstrats . From the underlying intention of being the perfect tool for the fast, virtuoso and boundary-pushing playing style of hard rock and heavy metal of the 1980s, another genre quickly developed within the electric guitar world: the heavy guitar.
Heavy guitars are instruments that are particularly suitable for metal and its numerous subgenres in terms of their optics and equipment . In addition, they often have a flat neck, such as the “Wizard”form from Ibanez , and a low string position, which promotes fast playing. There is often a longer scale length and 24 instead of 22 frets , for more expressive possibilities in solo playing and to be accurate in tuning even in deeper tunings. When it comes to the choice of wood, powerful mahogany is often used for the body and maple necks, sometimes in combination with a fretboard made of rosewood or ebony. There are also often strong output or active pickup in order to achieve the densest possible distortion and a clearly audible separation of the individual attacks, even at high playing speeds. Due to their midrange presence, humbuckers are mostly used, but there are also occasional instruments that also have one or two single coil pickup in the middle or neck position. A Floyd Rose vibrato system is also a popular component of heavy guitars, as the strings are clamped at two points in order to be able to carry out the wildest tremolo movements without detuning the instrument.
Of course, optics also play a crucial role. Black and other dark colors dominate here. In addition to the Superstrat already mentioned, there are of course also heavy guitars that are based on the classic Les Paul and SG models from Gibson or Epiphone . PRS and the aforementioned Ibanez also have some heavy guitars in their range. Manufacturers like ESP , Schecter and Jackson have even specialized almost exclusively in the production of heavy guitars. There are often extreme body shapes that are more or less reminiscent of the Gibson Explorer or Gibson Flying V.
