About John Mayer
John played the clarinet for a while in his youth, but with limited success. When he saw Marty McFly's guitar part in the film Back to the Future, he became interested in the instrument. At 13 he discovered the guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan via a cassette from his neighbour, which sparked his interest in the blues. After two years of practising he performed in blues bars and other venues and joined the band Villanova Junction. At 17 he received treatment for heart rhythm problems and began during that time working as a songwriter. After his discharge from hospital he wrote his first lyrics. In his songs John blends elements of R&B, rock, pop, blues and country music.
John initially attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, which he left during his second semester. At Berklee he had hoped to develop further as a guitarist, but he increasingly focused on songwriting. Instead of continuing his studies, he moved to Atlanta in the summer of 1998 with a fellow student to pursue a music career. After several festival appearances he released his debut album Room for Squares in 2001. The album produced numerous radio hits in the US, including No Such Thing, Your Body Is a Wonderland and Why Georgia.
In 2003 John won a Grammy for Your Body Is a Wonderland in the category Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. His first four albums all reached platinum status, and the following three albums Born and Raised, Paradise Valley and The Search for Everything achieved gold. John, regarded as a passionate guitar lover and collector, now owns around 200 guitars.
Besides his work as a musician, John is also involved in several charitable foundations and advocates for education, health and environmental protection. In 2006 he also founded his own fashion label called JMltd.

About John's guitars
John now owns over 200 acoustic and electric guitars. In 2005 he had two signature Stratocasters from Fender built for him, as well as a third Stratocaster with a characteristic “racing stripe” on the body. In February 2009 it was announced that Fender and John were working on a new version of his most famous guitar, the Black Relic. The guitar was dubbed "The Black One" and was released in two versions. However, these guitars are no longer available. From another collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith came John's current favourite model, the PRS Silver Sky .
The PRS Silver Sky - John's new favourite guitar
The design of the PRS Silver Sky is based on the ST-style guitars of the 1960s, but numerous modifications were made to further improve the guitars. The body of the guitar is formed by an alder body. The bolt-on maple neck with vintage profile is optionally available with a rosewood or maple fretboard. The coveted bird inlays are always included. Even the patented headstock was altered at John's request.
The sound of the Silver Sky is at least as impressive as the design. The guitars are equipped with three 635 JM single-coil pickups developed specifically for the Silver Sky. These deliver a clear, transparent tone with a certain vintage flair. The Silver Sky excels in many different musical styles and is therefore perfect for John's multifaceted musical style.
“It had been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that incorporates some of my preferred vintage specifications, but with a modern character and a modern aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of how a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel.”
