The Neumann U 87 Ai is probably the best-known and most widely used studio microphone from Neumann. It is equipped with a large double-membrane capsule that allows the different directional characteristics of omni, cardioid and figure-8 to be selected using a switches on the capsule head. Another switches on the back of the Neumann U 87 Ai causes 10 dB pre-attenuation. This means that the Neumann U 87 Ai can transmit sound pressure levels of up to 127 dB without distortion. Furthermore, the frequency response can be lowered in the low frequencies, for example to compensate for the proximity effect. The unavoidable increase in depth when talking at close range with pressure gradient receivers is compensated for in the Neumann U 87 Ai in such a way that a flat frequency response results in the cardioid position for a meeting distance of 30 to 40 cm and in the eight position for a distance of 15 to 20 cm.
