There are different types of microphones that differ technically and in their areas of application. But which microphone type is suitable for which use and what needs to be considered? The following answers the most important questions about the different kinds of microphones.

First there are the dynamic microphones. These are often referred to as live microphones because they are built very robustly and therefore don’t break straight away during sometimes rather rough stage use. This robustness is also reflected internally, as dynamic microphones can withstand very high sound pressure levels (SPL) and can therefore be placed without problems in front of loud guitar amps, drums or vocalists. For the latter there are also some wireless microphones that allow greater freedom of movement on stage. Also classed as dynamic, but by far less rugged, are ribbon microphones. Due to their technical construction they are very sensitive to shocks, strong air pressure and phantom power, and are therefore found more in studio use.

That brings us directly to the next category: condenser microphones, often called studio microphones. These have a flatter frequency response and react faster to incoming sound. Because of their often switchable polar patterns and the detailed, clear results they produce, they are especially valued for speech and vocal recordings. Condenser microphones are also used for miking acoustic instruments or as room microphones. They require a power supply, the so-called 48V phantom power, which is now found in most audio interfaces.

These are designed for recording podcasts or web radio, often feature an internal preamp and can therefore be connected directly to a computer via a USB cable.
