The cymbals of the Byzance series tonally form the lower end of the Meinl cymbal range. They all share a dark, low fundamental tone, with variations depending on finish or treatment. The cymbals' tonal character is best appreciated at more moderate volumes, where all sonic nuances can fully unfold.
Byzance cymbals are available with Brilliant and Traditional finishes, and also as untreated cymbals with a dark surface under the name Byzance Dark.
The Byzance Extra Dry models are hammered even more rawly and intensively in their finish, resulting in an appearance that to the untrained eye resembles metal that has lain on the seabed for years. The Byzance Dual cymbals combine the inner part of the Extra Dry models with a brilliant outer portion to sonically unite the best of both processing variants.
To simulate an ageing process, the Byzance Vintage cymbals have been treated with a sandblaster, resulting in an interesting matte finish and an exciting tonal character.
The Byzance Jazz cymbals, with their deep hammering, offer a pleasantly soft yet dry and dark sound.
A special feature are the Byzance Foundry Reserve models: a small selection of the highest-quality cymbals hand-hammered by masters in Turkey, becoming unique both visually and sonically.
The company Meinl was founded in 1951 by Roland Meinl as a one-man operation producing cymbals in a cellar workshop. Now in its third generation and family-run, Roland Meinl Musikinstrumente has become one of the biggest names in the production of cymbals, percussion instruments and sound therapy instruments, with locations in Gutenstetten and Nashville, TN.
Meinl Cymbals are manufactured at two locations. One production site is at the company headquarters in Gutenstetten in Franconia. This site has been specialised in high-precision automated production and hammering and has been continuously modernised since the new build in 2003. The series produced exclusively in Germany include, among others, HCS, Classics Custom, Classics Custom Dark, Classics Custom Dual as well as Pure Alloy and Pure Alloy Custom.
With the introduction of the traditionally hand-hammered cymbals of the Byzance Series in 2000, Meinl entered a centuries-old tradition of cymbal manufacturing in the home of cymbal craftsmanship – Turkey. Since the construction of the Turkish production facility in Samsun in 2019, production has taken place in a highly modern manufactory. After manufacture there, the cymbals are finished in the German factory and each one is strictly inspected for look and sound.
The cymbal range comprises seven main series that, based on six different alloys, cover a particularly broad sonic spectrum. These include: Byzance, Pure Alloy, Classic Custom, HCS, Symphonic/Marching, Generarion X and Artist Concept Models.
The range is complemented by Drum Gear – accessories for the drum kit – from drum rugs through practice pads and stick bags to cymbal cleaners and drum keys. Meinl Cymbals' endorsers include some of the most successful and well-known drummers of our time, among them: Benny Greb, Robert "Sput" Searight, Matt Garstka, Anika Nilles, Mike Johnston, Jost Nickel, Chris Coleman, Luke Holland, Brann Dailor and Wolfgang Haffner.
To experience the complete Meinl Cymbals range with all your senses, we warmly recommend a visit to our Walldorf branch. On site we host the first Meinl Flagship Store in Europe, where you'll find the entire Meinl Cymbals portfolio and even some special models that you can of course play and try out.
