The Gibson custom shop Murphy Lab 1957 SJ-200 in detail

The Gibson SJ-200 with a super jumbo body is also known as the "King of the Flat Tops". It unmistakably conveys the Vintage flair and feel of the era that produced some of the most valuable Gibson acoustic instruments. The SJ-200 model is world-famous and was played by real music greats such as Bob Dylan and Noel Gallagher, among others. Inspired by this true Vintage acoustic icon, Gibson's luthiers in Bozeman, Montana, in collaboration with Tom Murphy's aging gurus, have crafted an SJ-200 that corresponds to one of the most popular design versions from 1957 down to the smallest detail in terms of design and components , both visually and The sound is also convincing across the board.

Vintage features

This new custom shop 1957 SJ-200 Murphy Lab Light Aged features details like hand-selected flamed maple bottom and sides, a Vintage Gibson-style headstock, and a thermally aged top for the perfect Vintage vibe. The instrument was painted with Light Aged Nitrocellulose Lacquer by the experienced luthiers at the Gibson Murphy Labs. The Murphy Lab Light Aged finish paired with aged gold hardware simulates decades of light use, giving the guitar the unique character, charisma and feel of an original from the Golden Era of Gibson acoustic guitars. Of course, the mustache-style bridge typical of the SJ-200 should not be missing.

Murphy Lab Aging

For 25 years, Tom Murphy has been reproducing the vibe and character of Vintage guitars. In collaboration with the master luthier, Gibson scientifically analyzed and chemically recreated the original brittle and brittle Gibson paint from the 1950/60s, which caused cracks under the finish . Each Murphy Lab-aged creation goes through its own journey through the custom shop and receives the Murphy Lab nitro paint, which is applied by hand. Each Murphy Lab craftsman has been trained by Tom Murphy to become an aging expert.

About Gibson

The US Gibson Guitar Corporation, founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was initially known for production mandolins and banjos. Today the company's headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee and Gibson is one of the world's most well-known and renowned manufacturers of electric guitars.

The Les Paul model , named after its creator Lester William Polsfuss, is one of the most famous and best-selling electric guitar shapes of all time and founded the design of the single cut guitar, which has been copied, adopted and reinterpreted by numerous other manufacturers. The Les Paul is primarily valued for its warm and powerful sound . The humbucker pickup responsible for this, in its common design today, was also developed by Seth Lover at Gibson .

At the beginning of the 1960s, another solid body electric guitar from Gibson appeared, the Gibson SG . Initially intended as a successor to the Les Paul, it became another icon of rock history, thanks in part to Angus Young from AC/DC, and is the basis for the double cut guitar type .

With the Flying V and the Explorer , Gibson is responsible for two body shapes that were far ahead of their time at the time of their release in the late 1950s, but which also achieved legendary status over the years. To this day they also serve as the basis for a variety of heavy guitars , for example from manufacturers such as Jackson or ESP.

The Gibson custom shop produces commissioned work , high-quality one-off pieces and exact replicas of famous models and legendary vintages of their instruments. These are often subjected to an artificial aging process called relicing.

Acoustic guitars have also been produced for almost as long as the company has existed. The J-45 , the Hummingbird , the L-00 and the SJ-200 are among the most popular acoustic guitars in the world and were the instrument of choice for Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

In addition to the instruments already mentioned, you can of course also buy picks , bags and cases or merchandise from Gibson from us.

We are particularly proud to have a Gibson flagship store in our Frankfurt branch. There you will not only find a large selection and exclusive models to try out directly, but you will also benefit from the expertise of our Gibson -trained and certified employees when it comes to advice on the perfect guitar.
