The Gibson custom shop Murphy Lab 1942 Banner J-45 in detail

The appeal and legend of the Gibson J-45 lives on in the new custom shop Murphy Lab 1942 Banner J-45 Light Aged. The J-45 model is world-famous and has been played by real music greats such as John Lennon, David Gilmour and Ed Sheeran, among others. Inspired by the holy grail of Vintage acoustic instruments, Gibson's luthiers in Montana , working with Tom Murphy's aging gurus, have crafted a J-45 that matches the most popular and famous 1942 version in every detail in terms of design and components , both in appearance and sound convinced across the board.

Vintage features

The new custom shop Banner J-45 Light Aged in the style of 1942 has a thermally aged American Norway top (Adirondack spruce) top, hand finished with a dark Vintage sunburst in a historical style, a top brace with Hide Glue for better sound reproduction and a high-quality bone saddle. Of course, the eponymous banner logo on the headstock should not be missing. The instrument was finished with light aged nitro lacquer by the experienced craftsmen at Murphy Labs. The Murphy Lab Light Aged finish paired with lightly aged nickel tuning machines with cream colored buttons and Aged White binding and rosette simulates decades of light playing use and gives the guitar the unique character, charisma and feel of an original from the Golden Era of the Gibson guitar .

Murphy Lab Aging

For 25 years, Tom Murphy has been reproducing the vibe and character of Vintage guitars. In collaboration with the master luthier, Gibson scientifically analyzed and chemically recreated the original brittle and brittle Gibson paint from the 1950/60s, which caused cracks under the finish . Each Murphy Lab-aged creation goes through its own journey through the custom shop and receives the Murphy Lab nitro paint, which is applied by hand. Each Murphy Lab craftsman has been trained by Tom Murphy to become an aging expert.

Case and accessories

The Gibson custom shop 1942 Banner J-45 Murphy Lab Light Aged is delivered in a historically correct, black leather hard-shell case with red piping and purple lining including a Certificate of Authenticity and plenty of case candy in the form of a Gibson Accessory package.

About Gibson

The US Gibson Guitar Corporation, founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was initially known for production mandolins and banjos. Today the company's headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee and Gibson is one of the world's most well-known and renowned manufacturers of electric guitars.

The Les Paul model , named after its creator Lester William Polsfuss, is one of the most famous and best-selling electric guitar shapes of all time and founded the design of the single cut guitar, which has been copied, adopted and reinterpreted by numerous other manufacturers. The Les Paul is primarily valued for its warm and powerful sound . The humbucker pickup responsible for this, in its common design today, was also developed by Seth Lover at Gibson .

At the beginning of the 1960s, another solid body electric guitar from Gibson appeared, the Gibson SG . Initially intended as a successor to the Les Paul, it became another icon of rock history, thanks in part to Angus Young from AC/DC, and is the basis for the double cut guitar type .

With the Flying V and the Explorer , Gibson is responsible for two body shapes that were far ahead of their time at the time of their release in the late 1950s, but which also achieved legendary status over the years. To this day they also serve as the basis for a variety of heavy guitars , for example from manufacturers such as Jackson or ESP.

The Gibson custom shop produces commissioned work , high-quality one-off pieces and exact replicas of famous models and legendary vintages of their instruments. These are often subjected to an artificial aging process called relicing.

Acoustic guitars have also been produced for almost as long as the company has existed. The J-45 , the Hummingbird , the L-00 and the SJ-200 are among the most popular acoustic guitars in the world and were the instrument of choice for Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

In addition to the instruments already mentioned, you can of course also buy picks , bags and cases or merchandise from Gibson from us.

We are particularly proud to have a Gibson flagship store in our Frankfurt branch. There you will not only find a large selection and exclusive models to try out directly, but you will also benefit from the expertise of our Gibson -trained and certified employees when it comes to advice on the perfect guitar.
