Fender wollte 1961 sein Programm erweitern, und nach dem bereits Danelectro einen 6 saitigen Gitarrenbass vorgestellt hatte und der von damaligen Gitarrensuperstar Duane Eddy verwendet wurde, entschloß man sich, ein deutlich anspruchsvolleres Modell herauszubringen. Das war die Geburtsstunde des Bass VI. Der Bass VI sollte Gitarristen das Umsteigen auf den E-Bass erleichtern, im Prinzip ist dieser Bass eine Gitarre mit langer Mensur und um eine Oktave tiefer gestimmten Saiten. Prominente User waren Jack Bruce und die Beatles. In den 70er erlangte der Bass VI späte Bekanntheit durch die niederländische Bank "Hank the Knife & the Jets", die den Bass VI verwendeten. Alte Originale dieses Nischeninstruments sind selten und sehr teuer, aber es gibt Abhilfe: der Fender Vintera III Bass VI CAR ist eine Neuauflage dieses Exoten zum moderaten Preis. Optik, Schaltung und Ausstattung entsprechen dem Vorbild - ein exotisches, aber sehr cooles Instrument.
