As the name electric bass already suggests, this, like the electric guitar, is an electric instrument that only reaches a band-appropriate volume through an amplifier. In the early days the Bassman designed by Fender was enough to keep up in blues, swing or jazz bands, but by the 1960s — with the rise of rock music — a larger amplifier became necessary. However, in the 1980s the slightly overdriven and raw sound of tube amplifiers fell out of favour, and solid-state amplifiers — whose sound tended more towards hi-fi — became increasingly popular.
