With bass heads — also called bass amp heads — only the actual amplifying part of a bass amplifier (the head, as opposed to the cabinet) is meant. Different technologies distinguish them. Thus, in tube heads both the preamp (Preamp) and the power amp are built using tube technology (all-tube amp). A solid-state head is therefore based on transistors / semiconductor technology; a hybrid amp combines different designs. Most often this refers to a tube preamp combined with a transistor power amp.
