All about the Gibson Hummingbird Special
The Hummingbird in Gibson history
First released in 1960, the Gibson Hummingbird is one of the most distinctive and popular acoustic guitars ever made. The new Gibson Hummingbird Special is handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana by Gibson's experienced luthiers and offers guitarists a US-made Gibson Hummingbird model at a very attractive price.
Tonewoods and construction of the Hummingbird Special
The Gibson Hummingbird Special has a traditional, square-shoulder body. The back and sides are made from genuine, solid mahogany. The solid Sitka spruce top is reinforced by Gibson's traditional scalloped X-bracing. This combination of tonewoods delivers a warm, balanced tone with excellent dynamic range, suitable for any musical style. The "Concert Depth" body is slightly shallower than the body of the Hummingbird Standard, giving it a more focused and tighter bass response. The instrument is also lighter and easier to play.
Neck construction and fretboard
The Utile neck is joined to the body with a dovetail neck joint and, as with all Gibson acoustic guitars, is glued with hide glue. It has a comfortable, rounded profile. The rosewood fretboard has a 12" radius and features parallelogram inlays in mother-of-pearl: the visual hallmark that makes the Gibson Hummingbird so easy to recognise! The fretboard is fitted with 20 standard frets.
Hardware and design details
The traditional belly-up rosewood bridge is fitted with a TUSQ saddle, and the nut and bridge pins are also made from TUSQ. High-quality Grover Rotomatic tuners provide rock-solid tuning stability. The pickguard shows a simplified version of the world-famous historic Hummingbird graphic. The Gibson Hummingbird Special is finished in satin nitrocellulose lacquer in Vintage Cherry Sunburst and Wine Red. All Gibson Special models come from the factory equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element Bronze pickup with an active preamp.

The L.R. Baggs Element Bronze pickup system and the amplified sound
All Gibson Special models are equipped with the active L.R. Baggs Element Bronze piezo pickup under the saddle and an active preamp with an easily accessible volume control in the soundhole. This makes the guitar stage- and studio-ready straight away! A Gibson Premium softshell case is included.
Unlike typical bridge pickups for acoustic guitars, which mostly develop their sound depending on string compression, the L.R. Baggs Element system was designed to capture the actual movement of the guitar top.
The heart of the pickup is a flexible sensor film just two-thousandths of an inch thick that captures even the subtlest nuances of the guitar.

The Special models make the famous Gibson sound accessible to guitarists with smaller budgets who still want the distinctive Gibson logo and the "made in USA" badge. With the new models Hummingbird Special, J-45 Special and L-00 Special, Gibson presents reinterpretations of three classic models that are inseparably linked to Gibson's history. Price-wise, these guitars sit below the Standard series but above the visually simplified Studio models.
About Gibson
Die US-amerikanische Gibson Guitar Corporation, gegründet 1902 von Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, wurde zu Beginn bekannt durch die Fertigung von Mandolinen und Banjos. Heutzutage befindet sich der Hauptsitz der Firma in Nashville, Tennessee und Gibson zählt zu den weltweit namhaftesten und renommiertesten Herstellern von E-Gitarren.
Das Modell Les Paul, benannt nach seinem Erschaffer Lester William Polsfuss, ist eine der bekanntesten und meistverkauften E-Gitarrenformen aller Zeiten und begründete die Bauform der Single Cut-Gitarre, die von zahlreichen anderen Herstellern kopiert, übernommen und neuinterpretiert wurde. Die Les Paul wird hauptsächlich für ihren als warm und druckvoll charakterisierten Sound geschätzt. Auch der dafür mitverantwortliche Humbucker-Tonabnehmer, in seiner heute geläufigen Bauweise, wurde von Seth Lover bei Gibson entwickelt.
Anfang der 1960er Jahre erschien mit der Gibson SG eine weitere Solidbody E-Gitarre aus dem Hause Gibson. Zunächst als Nachfolger der Les Paul gedacht, wurde sie, auch dank Angus Young von AC/DC, zu einer weiteren Ikonen der Rock-Geschichte und ist die Grundlage für den Typ der Double Cut-Gitarre.
Mit der Flying V und der Explorer zeichnet sich Gibson für zwei Korpusformen verantwortlich, die zwar zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens, Ende der 1950er Jahre, ihrer Zeit viel zu weit voraus waren, aber im Laufe der Jahre ebenfalls Legendenstatus erreichten. Bis heute dienen sie auch als Grundlage für eine Vielzahl von Heavygitarren, beispielsweise von Herstellern wie Jackson oder ESP.
Der Gibson Custom Shop fertigt Auftragsarbeiten, hochwertige Einzelstücke und exakte Replikate berühmter Modelle und legendärer Jahrgänge ihrer Instrumente an. Oft werden diese auch einem künstlichen Alterungsprozess, genannt Relicing, unterzogen.
Fast genauso lange wie das Unternehmen existiert, werden auch Akustikgitarren produziert. So zählen die J-45, die Hummingbird, die L-00 und die SJ-200 zu den beliebtesten Westerngitarren der Welt und waren das Instrument der Wahl für Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley oder John Lennon.
