What sets the Special models apart?
The Special models make the famous Gibson sound accessible to guitarists who, despite a smaller budget, don’t want to do without the distinctive Gibson logo and the "made in USA" designation. With the new Hummingbird Special, J-45 Special and L-00 Special models, Gibson presents reinterpretations of three classic models that are inseparably linked to Gibson’s history. These guitars are priced below the Standard series — which have been the go-to guitars in the Gibson line — but above the visually much simplified Studio models.
Gibson quality for everyone
The Special models are immediately recognisable as Gibson guitars in both look and sound and are suitable for both professional musicians and ambitious hobbyists. All guitars feature a solid Sitka spruce top with Gibson's traditional Scalloped X-Bracing for a balanced tone with an excellent dynamic range. Both the top and the back are fitted with a single-ply, cream binding. The narrower body shape produces a more focused and nuanced tone and gives the Special guitars a more focused, tighter bass response that sits perfectly in the overall sound. Smooth-operating Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners provide reliable tuning stability. Each Special model is available with a satin nitrocellulose lacquer in the colours Sunburst or Wine Red.
L.R. Baggs pickup for amplified sound
All Gibson Special models are equipped with an active L.R. Baggs Element Bronze piezo pickup under the saddle and an active preamp with an easily accessible volume control in the soundhole, so the guitars are stage- and studio-ready straight away. The instruments are delivered with a Gibson Premium Softshell Case.
Unlike typical bridge-mounted pickups for acoustic guitars, which mostly develop their sound depending on string compression, the L.R. Baggs Element system was developed to capture the actual movement of the guitar top.
The heart of the pickup is a flexible sensor foil just two thousandths of an inch thick, which captures even the subtlest nuances of the guitar.
