The workstation is the all-rounder among keyboard instruments and its options are just as diverse. To get that variety under control quickly, a good workstation is indispensable.
One of the big advantages a workstation has over modern music computers is undoubtedly the short loading times. Appearance also plays an important role. It’s about making music, and a 61-key workstation reflects that much more than a laptop. Who wants to picture their big musical heroes sat behind a computer?
Korg's first all-in-one workstation
The first workstation came from Korg and impressed with its wide range of synth sounds and natural timbres such as guitar, piano, strings and many more. It was completed by programmable effects and the ability to play different sounds simultaneously.
Even today Korg is a leader in the field of high-quality workstations, as the Korg Krome EX 88 demonstrates. The premium instrument with its 88 keys comes with 4 GB PCM factory memory ready to store your compositions. A large number of multisamples and drum samples are available to the musician, as well as polyphony of up to 120 voices and a 16-track sequencer. All of this can be easily monitored and controlled via the graphic 800 x 400 pixel Touch View display.
All of this is topped only by the workstations from the Korg Nautilus series. Here cutting-edge technology merges with maximum musicality to create spectacular instruments. The NAUTILUS 88 from Korg is the keyboard for professionals and ambitious music fans. It allows creative sound design, processing of internal and external audio sources and excellent audio and MIDI multitrack recordings. The hardware includes, in addition to the best four-level graded 88-key RH3 hammer-action keyboard, a pitch-bend joystick, recessed real-time and dynamics controllers, standard MIDI and audio connections and a 7" TouchView™ colour display.
Buying a keyboard or synthesizer workstation online
If you decide to buy a workstation online, you should first be clear about how much power you actually need. The high-quality workstations from Korg, Yamaha or Roland are available in many price ranges. For beginners a smaller workstation is usually sufficient, for example the Roland Fantom-06 or the Yamaha MX61 MK2 with 61 velocity-sensitive keys. Both offer well over 100 different sounds and Zen-Core and SuperNATURAL or AWM2 sound engines, providing a solid foundation for aspiring musicians. Typical mid-range workstations include the Yamaha MODX7+ and the Kurzweil PC4. If you want to aim for the very top, take a close look at the workstations in the Yamaha Montage and the Roland Fantom series. Detailed information about these two top-tier series can be found on their respective overview pages.
