Modular systems complement modular synthesizers and are electronic musical instruments. The modular synthesizer consists of a variety of different modules that work together to create electronic sounds. Behind this dry description , an unexpectedly large world of sound opens up. A modular system includes mixers and phrasers , a variety of different devices for sound generation and sound processing and of course also patch cables, shifters, modules and thousands of connections to coordinate the fullness of the sound.

cable and connections

The most important modules are used to sound generation, such as the VCO, the sound change or the control. They are connected to each other via patch cables , sliders, patch panels or switches . With a certain quantity of modules, this creates a large number of connection options . At the end, the signal is either output by a loudspeaker or forwarded to a recording device .

The right distributor for the best sound

Any modular system is only as good as its connections. They not only ensure the right tone, but also ensure that the system is always expandable and therefore renewable. Multiple distribution modules , such as the Doepfer A-180 Multiples 1 or the high-quality Curetronic modular systems with their five height (u), captivate musicians of all styles. But despite all the technology: the majority of good modular systems remain analogue. Digital technology is only used in exceptional cases. The system mostly uses analog CV signals and distributes information such as pitch and note length. When the sound is fully developed, the connection to the digital world takes place via a midi-to-CV module, such as that offered by the Softube Modular or the paraphonic synthesizer Dreadbox Nyx.

Important components of a modular synthesizer

In any case, you need a VCO module or at least a VCO light module. Oscillators can be used to create a very unique sound character . The Noise and Digi-Noise take care of the noise. Filter modules , such as the Moogerfooger MF-103 from Moog , are also included, as is a ring modulator module. Anyone who hasn't lost the fun of old synthesizer machines will enjoy the CEM and SSM filter . A good multi-effects module is the Roland system-500 572 Phase Shifter + delay + LFO. A 5-stage Phase shifter in conjunction with an analog audio delay and a voltage-controlled gate delay as well as an LFO. One of Doepfer 's highlights is the Doepfer A-137-2 VC Wave Multiplier 2. A wave multiplier that creates four phase-shifted copies of a VCO signal and adds them to the original signal so that the sound of five independent VCOs sounds. These examples clearly show that when putting together a good modular system, it must always be about being able to combine different systems and companies with each other .
