The kit comes with 17 expressive pads and redesigned buttons for even smoother hands-on control, quick boot times, fast project loading, sample import and 16 GB of internal memory. The intuitive layout and classic SP effects provide a familiar feel for both experienced users and new beat makers. In addition, there is an improved sampling and sequencing workflow, DJ mode for mixing beats live, skip-back sampling and loop capture functions as well as many other powerful and creative tools.
Guerilla-Beatmaking
The SP samplers are known for their fast workflow, easy transport and haptic operating concept. The SP-404MKII continues this experience: the lightweight and robust design remains, while new features make it even easier to produce sounds and music anywhere. Build your beats anywhere thanks to battery operation (AA) or mobile power supply. Work on your music with another person thanks to the two headphone outputs and microphone/guitar input. Or record audio content to your mobile device via USB. With the integration of the popular Koala Sampler app, the SP-404MKII now also offers bi-directional sampling and a dedicated mode for remote control via hardware.
A sampler with a soul
With its brilliant OLED display and zoomable waveform view, editing samples with the SP-404MKII is a lot of fun. Create samples by typing in the edit points in real time or use Auto Chop to slice samples automatically. You can then refine the slices with Envelope and Pitch Shift. Turn any pattern or pattern chain into a sample at the touch of a button. Use the groove function to breathe more life into phrases and drum loops with swing parts and timing changes. With the skip-back sampling function, you won't lose a moment, as it automatically records up to 40 seconds of audio material from your performance retrospectively.
Sequencing for performers
With the SP-404MKII, you can quickly and easily create extraordinary patterns and energise your performances. The versatile real-time recording, dynamic editing tools and intuitive TR-REC step sequencer make it possible. You can choose between quantisation and shuffle, a roll button for entering and recording note repetitions and BPM-per-bank for instant tempo changes. Jam live with samples and organise your patterns for automated playback in different sets. Synchronise the SP-404MKII with external MIDI equipment and work with imported multitrack files. You can also save all samples of a pattern as individual WAV files via multipad export.
A treasure mine of sounds
Dive into the world of beat production - with the pre-installed sounds from the SP-404MKII's fast 16 GB internal memory. Here you will not only find a huge collection of curated samples, but at least as much space for your own sounds. You can now use up to 160 samples per project simultaneously with the SP-404MKII, which opens up even more possibilities for performing and beat building. In addition, you can use the Sound Generator to create mono synthesiser sounds to sample basslines, melody phrases and sound effects in the SP-404MKII.
Everything about effects
Edit and tweak your sounds with legendary SP effects and a selection of new classics. Proven SP effects like Vinyl Simulator and DJFX Looper are joined by powerful new additions like Lo-Fi, Cassette Simulator and Resonator. Layer and route multiple bus effects and motion recording effect parameters and create complex sound textures and dynamic reproductions. Or connect an instrument or microphone to the Mic/Guitar input to jam with effects such as Vocoder, Auto Pitch, Harmony and guitar amp simulation.

Roland was founded as a manufacturer of various music materials and studio technology on April 18, 1972 in Osaka, Japan. Among the earliest products to come onto the market were the first rhythm machines from the TR series, whose successors TR-808, TB-303 and TR-909 had a significant influence on both techno and electro music, as well as hip hop scene. The JC-120 Jazz chorus guitar amplifier was also created in the mid-1970s, and both Andy Summers from The Police as well as Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield from Metallica were audibly impressed by its ultra-clear sound in conjunction with the built-in chorus effect . Since then and to this day, Roland has continuously expanded its catalog with high-quality and interesting products in a wide variety of fields such as digital pianos, groove boxes, e-drums and synthesizers.
