How to play electric guitar - through an amplifier

Ok! You decided to play your electric guitar through the classic solution: an amplifier! Playing electric guitars through amps is a lot of fun! Through the big speaker cabinets you really move some air in the rehearsal room and on stage and get properly loud! Guitarists love that! One downside: the equipment is large and heavy.

Before you click through our large selection, there are a few quick decisions to make. Do you want an amplifier head with a matching cabinet or the compact combo option?

Pros and cons of amplifiers

Compared with our five other categories, this solution has the following

Advantages:
  • Clear, intuitive controls.
  • The clear layout of the controls is the same on almost all amplifiers (quick to get used to).
  • “Many electric guitarists love to move air.”
  • Some modern amps offer a headphone output and a USB connection.
  • Only here you'll find true valve power!
  • Really loud!
  • Boutique amps hold their value.
  • Modelling amps come with built-in effects.
Disadvantages:
  • Amplifier heads require a separate electric guitar speaker cabinet (cabinet) to be used!
  • Valve amplifiers are expensive. Solid-state and modelling amps are more affordable.
  • Large, cumbersome and heavy.
  • Valve and solid-state amps usually have no built-in effects except perhaps reverb and/or tremolo.

Expert opinion:

Both amp variants, i.e. an head with cabinet or a combo, are available in three versions: valve, solid-state and modelling

Most valve amplifiers have a straightforward layout. Valve and solid-state amps don't have submenus. Operation is simple and done via a control panel. Modelling amplifiers, on the other hand, offer built-in effects.  To make it easier for you to decide which solution to choose, we'll briefly cover the pros and cons of the three variants below!
