That's why here you'll find everything you need to know before buying your first electric guitar. Explained in the video by our guitar guru Olli and again here on the page for you to read at your leisure.
How do I find the right electric guitar?
First of all, it's worth asking yourself the following questions. The answers can be a decisive help when searching for the right instrument:
- Which guitars do I like visually and, if possible, in terms of how they feel?
- Which musical genres do I feel most comfortable in?
- What kind of music do I want to play with the guitar?
- Are there any well-known guitarists who inspire me or whom I want to emulate?
Electric guitars come in a huge variety of colours and shapes. It does, however, make sense to approach the topic along its historical development. Classics are classics for a reason.
Other guitar models
These two fundamental philosophies in guitar building have stood the test of time and can be found, to a greater or lesser extent, across all electric-guitar manufacturers.
If you'd rather keep as many options open as possible, there are also models that combine features of both types of electric guitars. An HSS-Strat (Humbucker–Single Coil–Single Coil), for example, has a humbucker in the bridge position and thus combines the construction of the Stratocaster with the output strength of a humbucker pickup. Many humbucker guitars also offer the option to split a coil via a switch, so a humbucker can be turned into a single-coil in an instant. That way you get a compromise of both worlds.
With HSS Strats you already enter the territory of the so-called Superstrats. These originated from the modified Stratocasters of the 1980s and, in addition to humbucker pickups, often feature tremolo systems that are tuning-stable but require more care and maintenance – again a matter of personal preference. If the heavier approach is more your thing, you should also take a look at the Superstrat-related Heavy guitars. These are guitars made especially for metal with very high-output pickups and a neck shape and action designed for fast playing. This category also includes 7- & 8-string guitars, which we would only recommend if you're absolutely sure you want to start with them. As a beginner, it's generally recommended to start with the classic six strings.
If you still have questions, we're of course happy to help by phone or email, but even better in our stores in Frankfurt and Walldorf.
