How to play electric guitar - using a complete system
What do we mean by that? By a complete system we mean a portable multi-effects unit (or pedal) with integrated electric guitar amplifier types. These complete systems come with practical features such as effects, a tuner and loopers.
Complete systems can be divided into two main categories: the amplifier types used are generated by Modeling or reproduced by so-called amplifier profiles / captures. New sounds for modeling devices are delivered via manufacturer updates. Profiles and captures are usually created, shared by a large user community or offered in commercial packs.
Advantages and disadvantages of complete systems
- compact all-in-one solutions with practical footswitches for changing presets
- a lot of amp models and effects, and handy tools such as a tuner and looper are integrated
- high-quality sounds on high-end units
- for home, studio, rehearsal room and stage
- suitable for solo (singer-songwriter) and band
- robust enclosure
- headphone output
- modern, software-updatable
- large complete systems with extensive features and very good-sounding amplifiers and effects are quite expensive
- complete systems are heavily dependent on usability and their software (if manufacturers don't provide updates, the complete-system concept can reach its limits)
Decide now:
To help you decide which system is right for you, we've listed the advantages and disadvantages:
Complete systems with Modeling
Pros:
- Detailed sound shaping of modeled amplifiers.
- The quality of the modeled components depends on DSP power and manufacturer updates.
Complete systems with Profiling / Capturing
Pros:
- One-to-one profiles / captures of real amplifiers per sound.
- If you want to fine-tune the sound after profiling / capturing, you have to put an EQ "on top" of the signal or re-profile / re-capture.
Expert opinion:
The great thing about complete systems is their universal applicability! Whether at home via headphones or on stage through a large PA, modern complete systems, like for example the Quad Cortex by Neural DSP, the Fender Tone Master Pro Board, the Kemper Profiling Amplifier or the ToneX Pedal by IK Multimedia, are all-in-one solutions for flexible electric guitarists.
