From the small shop to the big stages
In 1952 Alfred Dronge, the owner of a small music shop in New York, joined forces with former Epiphone vice-president George Mann to found the Guild Guitar Company. Driven by Dronge's passion for jazz, they initially focused on producing hollow-body electric guitars. In the years that followed acoustic guitars were introduced as well, and after a change of location the first Starfire and Polara models saw the light of day in the 1960s. These remain among Guild's most popular electric guitars today.
Many Guild models — such as the aforementioned Starfire and Polara, the D-40, D-35 and the jumbo F-40 — have become an integral part of modern music. Numerous artists have also taken a liking to Guild guitars and basses, including none other than Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, Brian May, Sheryl Crow and Tom Petty. Not to be forgotten is Slash, who plays a Guild double-neck, a combination of a solid-body electric guitar and a semi-acoustic 12-string.
