Buy bass effects units at session
Effects units are best known as small electronic devices that are placed between the guitar or bass and the amplifier to alter the sound. There are many different types such as reverb, echo, distortion or compression (Bass compressors compared), which help make the played sound more even and powerful. Different kinds of modulation or tone changes via filters are used depending on the musical style to make the sound more interesting, broader, or more altered.
From the guitar effect to the bass effect
However, effects units were for a long time found almost exclusively with guitarists, since bassists aimed for as clear and uncoloured a tone as possible. Still, one of the first effects that appealed to some bassists was distortion. Especially in rock they didn't want to be outdone by the guitarists and wanted the bass sound to be harder and dirtier. This led them to try to overdrive the amplifiers. At first this happened, just like with their bandmates on guitar, by using very high amplifier volumes and later via devices made specifically for this purpose.
The family of effects
As music evolved, so did effects units. Distortion pedals, fuzz effects, flangers, phasers, wah-wahs, echoes, reverb units and much more emerged - initially for guitar and later also for bass. Nowadays bass effects are a permanent part of the portfolios of major companies like Boss, Electro Harmonix or MXR and among bass-specialist firms like EBS or Aguilar the range of effects has steadily expanded over time.
But not only big companies offer effects for the electric bass. Small manufacturers like Darkglass or Okko also provide a fine selection of bass effect units. This lets bassists choose the effect pedals they need and build their own effects chain to shape their sound as they wish.
For bassists who want to use many effects at the same time without having to cable up lots of pedals and carry them around in a large case, there are multi-effects units. Thanks to powerful computer chips these offer many effects simultaneously in a compact housing, so that a wide range of bass sounds can be created, saved and recalled. If you're also interested in tinkering with your tone or experimenting with different effects, you'll find everything you need for that at session.
