About Mike Campbell
Mike Campbell is an American guitarist and songwriter. He learned to play guitar at the age of 16. After playing in two different bands, he became a founding member of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in 1975, a band he remained with continuously until Tom Petty's death. Alongside that he co-produced some of the band's albums as well as Tom Petty's three solo albums. He also wrote songs for other artists, for example much of the first album by Meat Loaf. His most successful composition is probably the song The Boys of Summer, which he co-wrote with Don Henley. In addition, Mike is also in the band The Dirty Knobs and has been a member of Fleetwood Mac since 2018. Mike is also an endorser for Fender and Duesenberg.
The guitar for the Heartbreakers' sound
Unique, versatile, original – the Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster is Fender's tribute to the gifted songwriter and guitarist with a special knack for extraordinary, catchy and beautiful guitar parts.
Mike Campbell's signature features are hot leads and danceable rhythms. His earworm hooks enrich many songs by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. We begin to uncover the secret of this unmistakable sound when we take a closer look at his Fender signature guitar.
Vintage feel with a modern touch
Mike bought the Tele that later became world-famous as the "Red Dog" from a former guitar student in Florida. An unusual instrument with a Bigsby tremolo and a special boost, the "Destruct" circuit. The mighty 1972 Red Dog Telecaster can be heard, among others, on Refugee from the album Damn the Torpedoes, and it also appears in the accompanying music video.
The Fender Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster captures the look and feel of the original. It gleams in a Heirloom nitrocellulose Red Dog Red finish, has a one-piece maple neck with a 7.25” fretboard radius, 21 vintage-style frets and a "Destruct" boost circuit. The Mike Campbell Red Dog custom pickup set consists of two vintage-style humbuckers and a Telecaster single-coil at the bridge with a Bigsby B5 tremolo. On the back of the guitar you'll find the exclusive Red Dog neck plate. The fine guitar is supplied in a matching vintage case including strap, picks and a certificate of authenticity.
