Buying the right In-Ear Monitoring set
On stage at the latest, every musician asks the question, how do I actually hear myself? In addition to the familiar monitor speakers, in-ear monitoring is becoming increasingly popular.
Having the perfect sound is extremely important for musicians. Therefore there are several things to consider before buying an in-ear solution. So that you can confidently order your desired earphones online, we want to give you a few tips and tricks.
How much do in-ear systems cost?
Cheap transmitter and receiver sets start at around €270. Sets with one transmitter and two bodypack receivers including earphones are in the region of €1,000. SHURE offers such sets, for example.
Which manufacturers offer monitoring systems?
Renowned manufacturers include Shure, Sennheiser, Presonus and Fischer Amps.
What are the advantages of in-ear monitoring?
No more feedback! The risk of signal feedback between a microphone and an in-ear system is virtually eliminated. This is a huge help, especially for entertainers who perform on very small stages. Monitor speakers sit in fixed positions. With such a system you can move freely on and in front of the stage. Focus completely on your performance! Another advantage is a consistently good sound.
The in-ear earphones are much smaller and lighter than large, heavy monitor speakers. Cable clutter is reduced as well. Less time for setup and teardown. The audience benefits too. The sound in the venue improves because no additional sound from the monitor speakers is reflected into the PA sound.
You shouldn't be afraid to move away from the "old" static monitor speaker solutions. After a short familiarisation period most sceptics are convinced.
Entry-level systems
Especially for beginners, universal single-driver systems offer a cost-effective switch to in-ear monitoring. These earphone systems usually emphasise the highs and less so the bass. Most instruments, vocals and rap fall within the mid-frequency range anyway. Economical earphones or earbuds are priced around €90.
Entry-level models typically use replaceable foam pads. The standardised size of the pads can be a drawback. Depending on the anatomy of the ear, the earphone can sometimes slip out. Some manufacturers include different ear tips with their earphones. If that isn’t enough, you can have custom moulds made for an additional fee.
Multi-way earphone systems
As with a passive two-way loudspeaker, these systems reproduce bass and mid-to-high frequencies. Drummers and bassists will find the right choice here. The ear tips are identical to those of the single-driver systems.
Due to their larger design these systems can feel uncomfortable in the ears. Products vary from one another, so testing on site is recommended.
Universal earphone systems
If you opt for a universal earphone system, you can optimise wearing comfort with a custom-made ear mould. The sound will also improve. The concha variant is particularly suitable. It offers optimal retention with high external attenuation. Ear moulds are made to measure and come at the corresponding price. FISCHER AMPS, for example, offers ear moulds.
Custom-fit earphone systems
These systems are usually offered with two-way technology. For even more bass some manufacturers offer three-way solutions. Everything is made to measure and to order. The best external attenuation compared with other systems is achieved here. For increased operational reliability additional features such as detachable cable connections are used. Also practical in the event of a cable break.
Wireless monitoring
For maximum freedom of movement the monitor signal can also be transmitted wirelessly. Features such as the auto-tune function automatically search for free frequencies. Dropouts, interruptions or interference are thereby minimised.
