Strictly speaking, the ukulele is a small, four-string guitar , at least in terms of construction. A ukulele also has a body consisting of a top, bottom and sides, a sound hole, a bridge to which the strings are attached and a fretted fretboard. Mahogany or Koa is usually used as the material ; only nylon strings are used for stringing. Unlike the guitar, a ukulele is tuned to the C tuning - gcea - with the thinnest string at the top. The D tuning ad-f sharp-b is also common.
Due to its small size , the ukulele is not only extremely portable, the manageable quantity of strings and frets makes it a particularly beginner-friendly instrument. Thanks to the easily accessible chord fingerings, with a little practice you can quickly accompany entire songs. Since ukuleles are available for purchase in many different bright colors, they are also ideal as gifts and to help children get started with making music.
Sizes and types of ukuleles
There are different types of ukuleles depending on size . The smallest form is the soprano ukulele with a scale length of 35 cm. The most common is the concert ukulele , whose scale length is 38 cm. There is also the tenor ukulele with 43 cm and the baritone ukulele with 50 cm. There are also very small, so-called sopraninos , but also bass ukuleles with a scale length of 52 cm, but these are tuned straight, like a normal bass.
As the body size increases, the instrument becomes more resonant and therefore louder, but also deeper in its frequency range. The best way to choose the right size is to pick up the different types of ukuleles and decide based on your own preference.
