Buy Wah Wah pedals at session

Where does the wah-wah pedal come from?

The origin of the wah pedal dates back to the 1920s. As an inventor, Clyde McCoy used a plunger mute to change the sound of his trumpet. Guitarists and bassists can use the wah-wah pedal to simulate this effect .
Thomas Organ from California built the first wah effect pedal for electric guitar and gave it the name “Clyde McCoy Wah-Wah”. The Vox company followed with the first Cry Baby models. There are countless variations, but the technology remains almost original. Artists and signature versions from Eric Clapton, Slash, Kirk Hammett, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmi Page to Steve Vai are offered by the manufacturers Vox, Morley, Electro Harmonix, MXR and Dunlop and cater to every sound taste.

How does a wah-wah pedal work?

With the wah effect you can intervene in your EQ , just like with an equalizer. Instead of changing the volume of a single frequency band , a wah-wah changes the frequency range itself. The bass or guitar signal is passed through a variable bandpass filter that filters out treble and bass components. You regulate this frequency range with your foot using the pedal rocker.

How do I connect a wah-wah pedal?

The question quickly arises. How and where should the Wah pedal be connected to other effects pedals? The Wah-Wah belongs to the group of distortion effects . It is therefore switched before the amp and not in the return and send path. The arrangement of the upstream effect pedals can vary depending on your taste and hearing. Here you have free choice and can try it out!

Which wah-wah is suitable for beginners?

Cheap wah effect devices start at around 50 euros. One of the classics, the Dunlop Cry Baby GCB95, is now available from us for under 100 euros. You can also buy boutique models from us. For example, we stock pedals from Friedman.

Legendary wah-wah pedal types

Guitar legend Jimi Hendrix played Vox's classic, the Clyde McCoy 848, in the 1960s. The Q-Tron Auto-Wah pedal from EHX is very well known. The Mutro III serves as a model. This in turn was popularly used by bassist Bootsy Collins and Stevie Wonder. Slash and Eric Clapton have Jim Dunlop 's Cry Baby on their effects boards. Last but not least is the Ibanez WH10. Guitar virtuoso John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers swears by his original, which is no longer made and fetches high prices when used.

Famous song examples

You have most likely already heard the use of wah-wah effects in well-known pieces of music. For example, in the solo part of Sweet Child o' Mine by Guns N' Roses. Hendrix used it in, among other things, Voodoo Child. Metallica's Kirk Hammett uses the effect in his Enter Sandman solo. Maybe some of you heard the sound of the wah pedal in the Shaft film score. By the way, the composer is Isaac Hayes.
