What do delay and reverb pedals do?
Delays and reverbs are time-based effects and reproduce the signal coming from your guitar with a time delay. The two effects are further developments of spring reverb - for which Vintage tube amplifiers are best known - and tape echo, which was used in studio recordings. These pedals make it possible to achieve complicated spatial sounds without having to take expensive and heavy equipment on stage. Both effects give your sound more spatial depth, but how do they differ from each other and how do you use them correctly and specifically? Olli has the answer! delay
A delay is an effect that causes one or more delays in your guitar signal. It therefore sounds something like an echo of your guitar. The quantity of delay repetitions, the delay time and the proportion of the delayed signal in the overall sound are usually adjustable. Some delays also offer a tap tempo function , where you can freely determine the delay rhythm and adjust it using the footswitch .
reverb
reverb is the English term for reverb or reverberation. A reverb is nothing more than an infinite number of echoes that combine to form a spatial reverberation. The reverb effect is one of the oldest guitar effects ever; spring reverb was already integrated into Fender amps in the 1960s. Reverbs come in different versions, such as room, spring or plate reverb. There are usually several reverb types included in one pedal.
Digital or analog circuit?
Especially when it comes to delay , you should ask yourself whether an analog or digital delay is the better choice for your sound . Analog delays, like the Boss DM-2w, generally have a warmer, sometimes almost dark sound. In addition, the lack of headroom adds a certain amount of compression, and sometimes even a slight distortion, to the sound . Digital delays, like the Boss DD-8, have a brighter sound. They are perfect for rhythmic delay sounds that should be present in the overall sound of a band.
The situation is similar with reverb. An analog reverb sounds most naturally like a Vintage amp, but with digital reverbs there are usually more different sound settings to choose from.
