Since 1974, the Roland RE-201 Space echo has been one of the most legendary and sought-after effects devices ever. Thanks to intensive development work and new innovations, the new BOSS RE-202 delivers the true-to-original Space echo sound more authentically than any other device before.
Developed by the manufacturer of the original, the modern pedal captures the magic of the RE-201 down to the last detail - from the magnetic tape to the motor to the dynamic spring reverb and the sound-coloring preamp circuit.
In order to further improve the classic Space echo experience and adapt it to modern music, the BOSS RE-202 has been given a variety of new functions.

The magic of tape echo
The Tape echo was the first delay effect and was one of the first effects processors for electronic musicians. In contrast to today's CPU-based tape echoes, it is a comparatively simple technical device that uses a motor to pull a tape over one or more recording and playback heads. The warm, full and dynamic tape echo sound is influenced by many factors. Due to the constantly varying input level, the amount of tape saturation and compression also changes constantly. In addition, motor speed fluctuations, friction, wow, flutter and other elements create an interesting and subtle modulated sound character that never sounds the same.

RE-201 Space echo: Simply legendary
The RE-201 was a milestone for Roland and was one of the best tape echoes of its time. It had three equally spaced sound heads that provided a variety of echo effects. It also featured an innovative free-running belt system that offered first-class performance with minimal belt wear. The control on the device enabled quick access to clean single delays or different tape head combinations for dense, rhythmic echo effects. With the spring reverb tank also integrated, the RE-201 also delivered high-quality ambience effects. The last crucial ingredient for the sonic variety of the Space echo was the analog preamp circuit.

The rebirth of a masterpiece
The RE-202 is the result of state-of-the-art technologies as well as an extensive analysis of several Vintage RE-201 devices, including an original device from the BOSS and Roland archives. In this way, the RE-202 brings the true Space echo experience back to life in a flexible, modern pedal.
BOSS has already captured the sound and essential properties of the Space echo close to the original in the past. Thanks to new technological developments, we have now managed to penetrate even deeper into the magic of sound. With the RE-202, our developers have captured in every detail the complex, non-linear behavior of the RE-201, which directly contributed to its legendary status. All factors that influence sound have been meticulously studied and recreated using completely new algorithms - including tape travel, record/playback mechanism, motor running speed variations, preamp coloration, magnetic tape wear, spring reverb character , and much more.
