What is blues music?

Blues is a form of music that first developed around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century within the African American community in the USA. The early form, Country Blues, contained elements of African, European and Caribbean music. The blues is one of the major inspirations and the source of a large part of popular music. Jazz, rock, rock ’n’ roll and soul are closely related to the blues, and elements of the blues can also be found in modern hip hop.
In its early phase the blues was only part of the repertoire of African American musicians, but social change in the 1960s led to increased interest in African American music particularly among Americans and also the British, and the blues also became interesting for white musicians. Alongside the growing number of live performances, newly founded record labels at that time also played a role in reissuing recordings that had been released on 78 rpm records in the 1920s to 1940s.

Many British rock bands of the 1960s took the blues as a basis for their music and carried this style back to the USA on tour. There it was picked up again by rock musicians, who developed the various styles of blues rock from it. Famous musicians and bands such as The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Peter Green, The Rolling Stones and Rory Gallagher were strongly influenced by the blues and derived their own styles from it.
