About John Mayer

John Mayer played the clarinet for a while in his youth, but with moderate success. When he saw Marty McFly's guitar interlude in the film Back to the Future, he became interested in the instrument. At the age of 13, he became aware of the guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan through a cassette gifted to him by his neighbour, which sparked his interest in blues. After two years of practising, he performed in blues bars and other venues and became a member of the band Villanova Junction. When he was 17 years old, he was treated for cardiac arrhythmia and began working as a songwriter during this time. After his release from hospital, he wrote his first lyrics. In his songs, John mixes elements from the styles of R&B, rock, pop, blues and country music.

John initially attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but left in his second semester. At Berklee, he had wanted to develop as a guitarist, but increasingly focussed on songwriting. Instead of continuing his studies, he went to Atlanta in the summer of 1998 with a university friend to pursue a career in music. After several festival appearances, he released his debut album Room for Squares in 2001. The album spawned numerous radio hits in the USA, including No Such Thing, Your Body Is a Wonderland and Why Georgia.
In 2003, John won a Grammy in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category for Your Body Is a Wonderland. His first four albums all achieved platinum status, while the three albums that followed, Born and Raised, Paradise Valley and The Search for Everything, all achieved gold status. A passionate guitar lover and collector, John now owns around 200 guitars.

In addition to his work as a musician, John is also involved in several charitable foundations and is committed to education, health and environmental protection. In 2006, he also founded his own fashion label called JMltd.

Affordable electric guitars for John Mayer fans

In addition to the Silver Sky from the USA, there is also the PRS Silver Sky SE to discover, which is manufactured in Asia and is significantly cheaper. The SE model can certainly keep up with the US original in terms of quality. There are also other affordable instruments for John Mayer fans to discover here:

The more affordable alternative: PRS Silver Sky SE

The SE Silver Sky is a reissue of the original Silver Sky model, which was first introduced in 2018. This workhorse offers plenty of sounds and good playability and is available in many different colours. The PRS SE Silver Sky has a poplar body, a bolt-on maple neck and a maple or rosewood fingerboard with the typical PRS bird inlays. The 22-fret neck with a scale length of 25.5" has the original 635JM neck profile and an 8.5" fingerboard radius. When you plug it in, it really starts to shine when the three single-coil 635JM "S" pickups come alive. This guitar is equipped with a two-point tremolo, a synthetic bone nut and vintage-style tuners. Other design features include the inverted shape of the PRS Silver Sky headstock and the easily adjustable PRS truss rod. The SE Silver Sky comes with PRS Classic 10-46 strings and gig bag.

About Johns Guitars

John now owns more than 200 acoustic and electric Guitars. In 2005, he had two signature Stratocasters built by Fender and a third Stratocaster with a characteristic "racing stripe" on the body of the guitar. In February 2009, it was announced that Fender and John were working on a new version of his most famous guitar, the Black Relic. The guitar was maned "The Black One" and was released in two versions. However, these guitars are no longer available. Another collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith resulted in John's current favourite model, the PRS Silver Sky.

The PRS Silver Sky - Johns new favourite

The design of the PRS Silver Sky is based on the ST guitars of the 1960s. However, numerous modifications were made to improve the guitars even further. The base of the guitar is formed by an alder body. The bolt-on maple neck with vintage profile is available with either a rosewood or maple fingerboard. However, the coveted bird inlays are always included. Even the patented headstock was modified at John's request.
The sound of the Silver Sky is at least as impressive as the design. The guitars are equipped with three 635 JM single-coil pickups specially developed for the Silver Sky. These deliver a clear, transparent sound with a certain vintage flair. The Silver Sky shines in many different musical genres and is therefore perfectly suited to John's multi-faceted musical style

“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.”
