Boss effect pedal guide: Delay & Reverb
What do delay and reverb pedals do?
Delays and reverbs belong to the time-based effects and reproduce the signal coming from your guitar with a time delay. The two effects are developments of spring reverb — which is especially known from vintage tube amplifiers — and tape echoes that were used in studios for recordings. These pedals make it possible to achieve complex spatial sounds without having to take expensive and heavy equipment on stage. Both effects give your sound more spatial depth, but how do they differ and how do you use them correctly and purposefully? Olli has the answer! In this video he presents the best-known reverb and delay effects from Boss. Alternatively, you can also learn more about the two effect types and their representatives further down in this guide.
Delay
A delay is an effect that causes one or more delays of your guitar signal. It therefore sounds roughly like an echo of your guitar. The number of delay repeats, the delay time and the wet/dry mix of the delayed signal are usually adjustable. Some delays also offer a Tap Tempo function, where you can set the delay rhythm freely and activate it with a footswitch.
Reverb
Reverb is the English term for hall or reverberation. A reverb is nothing more than infinitely many echoes that merge into a spatial reverberation. The reverb effect is one of the oldest guitar effects — for example, spring reverb was already integrated into Fender amps in the 1960s. Reverbs come in various types, such as Room, Spring or Plate reverb. Most pedals include several reverb types.
Digital or analogue circuitry?
Especially when it comes to delay you should ask yourself whether an analogue or digital delay is the better choice for your sound. Analogue delays, like the Boss DM-2W, generally have a warmer, sometimes almost darker tone. In addition, the lack of headroom adds a certain compression and sometimes a slight distortion to the sound. Digital delays, like the Boss DD-8, have a brighter tonal character. They are ideal for rhythmic delay sounds that need to cut through the mix of a band.
Similar considerations apply to reverb. An analogue reverb sounds most natural with a vintage amp, but digital reverbs usually offer more different sound options to choose from.
