This question is very hard to answer, because the range of different microphones from various manufacturers is very large. Choosing becomes easier if you first narrow down which type of microphone you need before deciding on a manufacturer and model. In this video we explain the operation of different microphone types: dynamic microphones — moving-coil and ribbon — and condenser microphones, which are divided into large-diaphragm and small-diaphragm microphones. Boundary microphones are also discussed. Their construction and technology give rise to specific characteristics and thus to their applications, such as live microphones and studio microphones, vocal microphones or specialist and all-round instrument microphones, which are also explained in this tutorial video.
