Preparation:
- Place the guitar on a stable, soft surface to avoid scratches.
- Make sure you're working in a well-lit area.
- Have your tools ready to hand.
Step 1:
Remove old strings
Here we show you step by step how to loosen and remove the old strings on your steel-string acoustic guitar.
Loosen old strings
Release the tension of the old strings by turning the tuning pegs counter-clockwise. A string winder can speed up this process.
Remove bridge pins
Use the string winder with an integrated pin puller or pliers to remove the bridge pins. Be careful not to damage the pins.
Cut the strings
When the strings are loose enough, cut them with pliers and remove them from the tuners. Pull the strings out carefully to avoid scratches or damage.
Step 2: Clean the guitar
A string change is a great opportunity to clean and care for your guitar. We'll show you how.
- Wipe the guitar body and bridge with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dust and dirt.
- Apply a small amount of fretboard oil to a cloth or cotton pad and rub it into the fretboard, especially on rosewood or ebony fretboards. Let the oil sit for a few minutes and wipe off any excess with a dry cloth.
Step 3:
Fit new strings
Next your guitar will of course need new strings. Here's how to do it.
Sort the strings
Lay out the new strings and sort them by gauge. They are usually packaged in individual envelopes and labelled accordingly. The thickest string is the low E (6th), and the thinnest is the high E (1st).
Attaching at the bridge
Start with the low E (6th string). Insert the ball end of the string into the bridge hole and push the bridge pin back in so the string is clamped under the pin. Repeat this for all strings.
Attach to the tuners
Thread the string through the hole of the corresponding tuning machine. Leave about 5-8 cm of string to allow enough windings. Start winding by turning the tuner clockwise. Make sure the string winds evenly and neatly.
Step 4:
Tune the new strings properly
Here we show you how to prepare your new strings correctly so you can play on them.
Trim the strings
After you've fitted the string, trim it with wire cutters.
Tune the strings
Use a tuner to bring each string to the correct pitch. While tuning you can gently stretch the string to stabilise it.
Fine-tuning
Play the guitar for a few minutes and tune the strings again. New strings often stretch and need a few adjustments before they hold tune.
