In the late 1980s Paul Reed Smith asked Ted McCarty to advise him on guitar design and production techniques. McCarty had previously been employed at Gibson, which was reflected in his guitar designs. He served not only as a mentor but also became a good friend to Paul and everyone he met at PRS. In 1994 PRS launched the first McCarty, an instrument that embodied the full range of techniques and knowledge Paul had received from Ted, as well as his own experience as a luthier.
In the 2000s the McCarty received an SE variant to give beginners and budget-conscious guitarists the chance to enjoy the sound and feel of a genuine McCarty. The SE McCarty 594 is available with a mahogany body and flamed maple top as single- and double-cut models, as well as the McCarty 594 Standard Doublecut with a mahogany body without a maple top.
