The history of Mark amps

Based on the Fender Princeton, the Mark I had a clean sound that was highly valued among guitarists. However, the increasing use of more distorted lead sounds required a different technique that also had to adapt to the conditions of live operation . Mesa/Boogie founder Randall Smith achieved this by incorporating a second stage into the pre-amp . The first preamplifier can overdrive the second preamplifier in such a way that an intense, distorted sound is created even at a low overall volume.

The concept worked: from 1971 to 1978, 3,299 Mark I amplifier were produced and sold. The Mesa Mark I amplifier are now considered legendary among guitarists . For example, Carlos Santana still plays a 1972 Mark I, which characterizes his singing guitar sound. The Mark I received many modifications until it was replaced by the Mark II in 1978 , for example early versions had no reverb, later versions had a graphic equalizer and switchable power reduction, a forerunner of Multi-Watt™ technology.

The most famous guitarists who use or have used a Mark amplifier include Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield from the band Metallica , Dexter Holland and Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci. AC/DC 's Angus Young also played with Mesa/Boogie Mark amps in the 1990s.

The Mark series today

All Mesa/Boogie Mark amplifier are made from high quality birch plywood and are manufactured in Petaluma, California, where the company has always been headquartered. The construction / acoustic is very robust and durable , but still extremely light, which makes the Mark amplifier an ideal companion on tour. An absolute highlight is of course the headphone output with speaker mute , which is rarely found on tube amps. All combos are also equipped with Celestion speakers .
