Buying the right DJ headphones
As a DJ you quickly ask yourself which headphones are right. After all, the perfect headphones are just as essential as the music you play. Earphones are not only sold by traditional music shops — countless online stores also try to lure potential customers with stylish label add-ons like "DJ". To help you make the right choice and avoid regretting your purchase, we give you a few important tips on buying DJ headphones. You are welcome to use our online advice or order directly from our webshop.
What exactly are DJ headphones?
A disc jockey has very specific requirements for their music equipment. Headphones are no exception. Classic DJ headphones come in the over-ear design, where the ear cups completely cover the ears. There are also many on-ear (resting on the ear) models. Here it's a matter of trying them out and comparing.
The first important point is the output level. With loud party sound and insufficient output level from the DJ equipment you're using, you can soon lose your own mix. High-sensitivity drivers help here. Please pay attention to the corresponding impedance!
Good DJ headphones excellently isolate ambient noise. They sound different from hi‑fi or studio headphones. In live situations you need to match tracks and create transitions. Headphones with a cosmetically enhanced sound won't help you there. Speaking of beat matching: DJ headphones will normally have foldable and swivelling ear cups. That makes it easy to sync the incoming track with the club sound already playing.
For longer gigs a comfortable fit is important — whether worn on the head or around the neck. They should not feel uncomfortable. If the headphones also make a sturdy, high-quality impression, nothing stands in the way of a great performance.
Cables and plugs
To prevent cables getting in the way when constantly putting them on and taking them off, this type of headphone usually has a single-sided cable lead. Typical cable lengths are two to three metres. A coiled cable (curly or spiral cable) increases freedom of movement on stage. The spiral shape offers advantages: it's strain-relieving and when stretched the cable length can reach several metres. In its resting state you avoid cable tangles.
Thick cable sheathing, supportive and detachable cable connections help in everyday DJ use. If cables or connections break from constant on/off wear, replaceable parts in modular constructions can save you from an expensive replacement. Some connectors have threads — this offers extra protection against losing the small mini-jack to jack adapters.
Looks and design
To match your own wishes and lifestyle ideas, DJs can choose models from a wide range of favourite brands in a variety of colours and shapes. As individual as your track selection, so can your headphones be.
Which manufacturers are there?
Classic brands include Pioneer or Audio Technica, and V-Moda and Sennheiser are also represented.
How much do headphones for disc jockeys cost?
Cheap entry-level models at music retailers are available from €60. Professional equipment is significantly over €300. The price difference is not only due to build quality but also much better external noise isolation and features such as Active Noise Cancelling or the S-Logic Plus technology found in the premium ULTRASONE models.
