Metronomes are useful musical tools that were developed by Dietrich Nikolaus angle . Using an acoustic , sometimes also optical signal , they help to improve your sense of rhythm and tact . The tempo of the signal, which is output as a kind of pulse, is given in BPM (beats per minute) .
Usually you let the metronome run during an exercise in order to be able to play individual phrases, licks, rhythms or entire songs more precisely and precisely in time. You often start the metronome at a slower tempo at which the exercise can be carried out fluently and correctly and then increase it step by step over time until the " target tempo " is reached. A distinction is mainly made between digital or electronic metronomes and mechanical metronomes. The mechanical metronome is wound up and then swings at the set tempo using a pendulum and a weight. The classic and often elegant-looking mechanical version is usually found on a piano. A digital metronome is usually not only much more compact, but also offers other helpful setting options. Not only can different note values and time signatures be set, but the sound of the beat can often also be adapted to the needs of the user. These often have a headphone output so that, depending on the instrument , the metronome can also be used at a later hour or during band rehearsals. Some digital metronomes, such as the Chicago Classic MetroTuner or the TM-60 from Korg , even have an integrated tuner.
