Construction and sound creation

The recorder is built from the sopranino to the great bass flute , usually divided into three parts: head, middle piece and foot joint . Sopranino to alto flutes are also available in a two-part design. The connecting pins of the flutes are provided with waxed cords, cork rings or, in the case of school recorders, with a rubber ring as a seal.
The sound on the recorder is created by the airflow that is guided through the wind tunnel/core gap onto the cutting edge. The air flow is broken there. The resulting vibration continues in the air column inside the center piece. The air column thus forms the resonance body for the resulting sound. The pitch is changed by lengthening or shortening the air column , placing your fingers on or lifting them from the tone holes.
All recorders usually have seven holes on the front and one hole on the back. Some of the large flutes are equipped with keys , which makes playing easier or even possible in the first place.

The most famous recorder makers

Important manufacturers of recorders are the companies Moeck from Celle and Mollenhauer from Fulda. The recorders from the Swiss manufacturer Küng are also interesting.
Recorders are made from different types of wood. Maple, barrel and cherry are often used, more rarely olive, grenadilla, boxwood, rosewood, plum, etc
Soprano recorders for children and for use in primary schools are also available with a plastic head. This is much less sensitive and lasts longer than a wooden head. However, compromises have to be made when it comes to the sound properties.
There are also recorders from various manufacturers that are made entirely of plastic.
