From classical and jazz to ska – the trumpet is a welcome sound everywhere. Already hundreds of years ago its precursors, such as the fanfare, announced the arrival of important figures with a majestic sound. If you're about to buy a new or even your first trumpet and want to know what to look for when buying, you've come to the right place.
Let's start with the basics. The primary material of the trumpet is in most cases brass. To prevent this from being attacked by saliva produced while playing, an alloy of gold brass or nickel silver is common. A trumpet made of gold brass is said to produce a warmer tone, silver-plated instruments are considered more durable but also more expensive.
You also distinguish between trumpets with rotary valves, which are more common in classical music, and the far more common — and recommended for beginners — trumpets with Perinet valves (piston valves). Perinet valves are made from stainless steel or Monel; which of these materials is right depends on the player's personal preference. For the leadpipe, a diameter described as medium-large has largely become standard. High-quality instruments are also characterised by a hand-hammered bell.
When buying a beginner trumpet you should pay attention, besides easy response, to good intonation or tuning. Although incorrect intonation can and must be compensated on any trumpet using the slides, an instrument that is well in tune from the outset makes it easier to make music and brings more fun and a sense of achievement when practising.
