The Taylor Custom GS C16ce #17 in detail

The day before the annual NAMM Show, Taylor Guitars traditionally presents a series of custom guitars that are only available at the event at The Catch restaurant in Anaheim, California. Called "Catch Customs," these guitars are built to offer finishes, design options, tonewoods and specifications not normally available through Taylor 's custom order program. Each guitar is handcrafted from the highest quality materials in the Taylor custom shop in the USA.

Tonewoods

The Custom GS C16ce #17 features a similar tonewood pairing to Taylor's 600 series: a Sitka top top with flamed Big Leaf Maple bottom and sides. Maple has long been associated with a bright acoustic sound , but Taylor 's maple guitars are tuned to bring out more warmth, fullness and sustain. This expands maple's tonal range from a one-dimensional sound to a more versatile sound. The combination with Sitka spruce delivers a balanced tone with lots of sustain, while the light color of the woods harmonizes perfectly.

neck and fretboard

A classic ebony fingerboard rests on the slim, comfortable to play, patented Taylor neck, which, unlike most Taylor guitars, is not made of mahogany but rather of flamed Canadian Hard Rock Maple. The ebony for the fretboard comes from sustainable cultivation on Taylor's own plantation in Cameroon. The mission inlays made from maple and Hawaiian koa wood ensure perfect orientation on the fretboard at all times. The neck transitions into a headstock, also made of maple, with an ebony veneer and a simple Taylor maple logo inlay . Taylor's in-house tuning machines in a polished bronze look ensure the right tuning , which fits perfectly into the design of the guitar.

Design highlights

With the flamed Grand Symphony maple body, the GS C16ce #17 attracts everyone's attention. The high-gloss finish brings out the flaming of the wood to its best advantage. The maple binding is contrasted with a black border on the body and top . The custom single ring rosette consists of ornamentation made of maple and koa wood. A special design feature is the "Bound sound hole": The sound hole has been elaborately framed with a second, slim ring made of maple. Taylor's tried and tested Soundport cutaway, which noticeably improves projection when playing, is also included.

Perhaps the biggest highlight, however, is the TaylorSense system : It monitors humidity, temperature, battery life and the stress on the guitar caused by external influences, such as shocks. In addition to monitoring the guitar's condition, TaylorSense also sends the data via bluetooth to the free TaylorSense mobile app, available for both iOS and Android devices, which sends push notifications when the guitar needs care.
