As with almost all large software companies, the story of Native Instruments began with just two people. On the one hand there was Stephan Schmitt, musician and engineer, and Volker Hinz, good friend and programmer. In Berlin Kreuzberg the two created the world's first modular synthesizer. In the founding year of 1996, the development of new types of software instruments, such as Reaktor, began with just four employees.
