After the takeover by CBS in 1965, the Stratocaster was modified several times. In 1966, for example, the headstock was enlarged to match the look of the Stratocaster to the Jaguar and Jazzmaster. Although the new look took some getting used to, the larger headstock also seemed to counteract problems with warping of the wood that occurred with the old design. The design remained unchanged until the 1980s, when the company switched back to the smaller headstock. Guitars from this period are rarely copied in the Custom Shop, so this model, which is based on a guitar from 1968, is a real rarity:
The Fender Custom Shop 1968 Stratocaster DLX Closet Classic MN 3TS is a classic ST-style electric guitar with a two-piece alder body. Alder wood was already used in the original Stratocaster guitars and provides the basis for the perfect vintage sound. The body wood was selected by hand to ensure a particularly light weight and thus improve playing comfort. The aged maple neck with maple fingerboard has a 1969 ‘U’ profile and a fingerboard radius of 9,5", offering the perfect compromise between vintage feeling and modern comfort. The guitar is equipped with a classic S-S-S pickup combination of three Fender Custom Shop Hand-Wound 1969 single coils. Other features include Fender Vintage Style tuners, white poti caps, a Fender 6-Saddle American Vintage Synchronised Tremolo Bridge and a three-ply white pickguard.
This model is finished in a classic 3-tone sunburst colour. The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish ensures that the wood can vibrate particularly well and that the lacquer finish ages more beautifully. We all know the stories of old guitars that have been found in grandma's attic and barely played. This is the Closet Classic. It's in great condition with very little signs of use, but it has aged perfectly over time. A few light scratches adorn the finish, the plastic on the pickguard and pickups has started to take on that unmistakable yellow tint, and there is minimal tarnishing on the hardware. The Closet Classic gives you the feeling of playing a long-lost treasure.
