1954 kam die Fender Stratocaster nach langer Entwicklungszeit endlich auf den Markt. Das Instrument sah aus wie keine Gitarre zuvor: Der Korpus wirkte kurviger und fließender als der der Telecaster und sollte den Spielkomfort erhöhen, die neue Kopfplatte erinnerte ein wenig an die alten Bigsby-Kopfplatten, die Klinkenbuchse war elegant in der Korpusseite versenkt, anstatt auf der Oberseite und die Strat war mit drei Single Coil-Pickups ausgestattet. Die Gitarre bestand aus einem Eschenkorpus und einem angeschraubten Ahornhals und war zunächst nur mit 2-Colour-Sunburst- oder White Blonde-Finish erhältlich. Am Anfang war sie jedoch noch kein Kassenschlager, nach und nach wurde die Strat jedoch immer beliebter und zu einem festen Bestandteil der Musikgeschichte.
Anfangs war die Stratocaster nur in den beiden oben erwähnten Farben erhältlich, ab 1957 wurden jedoch die ersten Custom Colours eingeführt, die dem Kunden gegen Aufpreis ermöglichte, eine farbenfrohere Gitarre zu bestellen. 1959 wurde der Strat, gemeinsam mit der Telecaster, ein Facelift spendiert: Die Bodies wurden nun aus Erlenholz gefertigt und die Ahornhälse wurden mit Griffbrettern aus Palisander ausgestattet, was für einen wärmeren Gesamtklang sorgte. Auch kamen neue Farben zu den bisherigen Custom Colours dazu.

Die Fender Custom Shop 1963 Stratocaster Relic Aged British Racing Green Metallic ist eine klassische ST-Style E-Gitarre mit einem Korpus aus Erle. Erlenholz wird bereits seit Ende der 1950er Jahre bei den originalen Stratocaster-Gitarren verwendet und bietet die Basis für den perfekten Vintage-Sound. Der gealterte Ahornhals mit Palisandergriffbrett ist in einem Oval "C"-Profil im Stil der 60er Jahre gehalten und mit einem Griffbrettradius von 9,5" versehen, der den perfekten Kompromiss zwischen Vintage-Feeling und modernem Komfort bietet. Die Gitarre ist mit einer klassischen S-S-S Tonabnehmerkombination aus drei Fender Custom Shop Handwound 60/63 Strat Single Coils ausgestattet. Zur weiteren Ausstattung gehören Fender Vintage Style Mechaniken, Potikappen in Vintage White, eine Fender Synchronized Tremolo Bridge und ein dreilagiges, mintgrünes Pickguard.
Dieses Modell ist in einem auffallenden British Racing Green Metallic lackiert. Das dünne Nitrocelluloselack-Finish sorgt dafür, dass das Holz besonders gut schwingen kann und dass die Lackierung schöner altert. Die Gitarre ist herrlich dinged, eingedellt und sogar ein wenig verkratzt. Eines der attraktivsten Merkmale dieser Relic-Stufe ist der abgenutzte Hals.
