One of the great advantages of digital sound generation is the almost unimaginable variety of digital sonic worlds. A variety that is already onboard the usual electronic organs and synthesizers and can be significantly enhanced by filters and effects.
Analogue or digital sound generation – the music is what matters
The question of analogue or digital sound generation is debated more often than necessary. While some celebrate that digital sound generation is clear, pure and error-free, others feel that the soul is missing.
The analogue filter builds the sound structures with electronic components such as capacitors, transistors, tubes, resistors, operational amplifiers and logic ICs. The digital filter has these structures as logic code, so-called VHDL, on board.
The fact is that the analogue filter sounds a little warmer. It offers many opportunities for imperfections, which can then also turn into interesting sonic experiences. Digital filters and digital modulation effects, on the other hand, offer incredibly wide creative possibilities and cool GUIs for comparatively little money.
Buying filters and effects online – what should you look out for?
The range of different filters and effects is at first glance quite confusing. It's important to pause and think carefully about the purpose the device will be used for. A filter attenuates the spectrum of an audio signal in ranges from 20 Hz to about 15 kHz and changes the acoustic character of the signal. For simple devices a distinction is made between notch, high-pass, low-pass and band-pass filters. Multimode filters also offer additional modes.
Modulation effects also change the audio signal, mechanically, electronically, digitally or – in many cases the best option – as a combination. Devices are also distinguished by their form factor. While desktop or module effects are switched by hand, the so-called “pedal effects” can also be switched with the foot. They are used primarily by guitarists and electric violin players.
