Stage pianos are mostly digital pianos that are designed for use on stage. That's why they are characterized above all by their robustness , portability and the simplest possible operation , so that the many sound possibilities of the musical performance can be used and not confusing during the performance. Therefore, stage pianos usually offer direct access to certain sounds, effects and presets.

Stage pianos and their sounds

Features mainly include the sounds of keyboard instruments needed on stage, such as piano , harpsichord , electric pianos and organ . Some also have a dedicated organ section with drawbars or corresponding controllers. There are also the typical effects such as chorus , tremolo , reverb , Leslie , flanger , Phase , wah-wah and much more that serve the live sound . Some models focus more on instruments for classical music, others concentrate more on electric piano sounds. Of course, most instruments are designed for variety and flexibility, so that they often contain the entire range of instrument sounds beyond keyboard instruments. Drum rhythms , samplers , synthesizers and sequencers can also be integrated. This means they are not only suitable for the stage but also for the studio .

Pros and cons of hammer action

Since high-quality keyboards with hammer action are heavy, compromises sometimes have to be made if the instrument is to be compact and light. Or pianists have to accept greater weight for a high-quality keyboard in their stage piano. While most stage pianos do not have their own loudspeaker because they are played on stage via an amplifier or PA and monitor anyway, there are also models that come with built-in speakers for home use.

sound generation on the stage piano

Apart from the handcrafted electric pianos from Vintage Vibes , which are built along the lines of Rhodes and Clavinet complete with hammer action and electro-acoustic sound generation , all stage pianos are based on digital sound generation . This is based either on sampling or physical modeling . While sampling is based on elaborately recorded instrument sounds, physical modeling calculates the physical parameters and thus simulates the sound generation . In this area, the manufacturer Physis Piano achieves amazing results. Stage pianos in various price ranges are primarily manufactured by Casio , Clavia Nord , Kawai , Korg , Roland and Yamaha . The instruments differ in the quality of sound generation, keyboard, user interface, enclosure and the range of functions.
