Digital pianos , as the name suggests, produce sound using digital technology . sampling technology is fundamental for this. It has been shaping music technology since the 1990s and has been continually refined in order to make instrument sounds even more authentic and also to ensure a corresponding playing feel with the expressive possibilities of an acoustic instrument. This is why modern digital pianos sometimes also work with physical modeling . Here, the sound generation is digitally recreated, i.e. it is done by calculating physical parameters. This allows sounds to be created quickly without having to load large samples. This also makes it possible to make sound settings on the instrument and to adjust physical properties of strings, pedals and body, such as the lid opening, without needing separate samples for each sound change. Popular manufacturers include Casio , Kawai , Korg , Roland and Yamaha .

The difference between electric piano and digital piano

Digital pianos are often referred to as electric pianos, although the term actually refers to electro-acoustic instruments such as Wurlitzer, Clavinet or Rhodes, whose legendary sounds can also be found under this term in the sound selection of digital pianos. This usually refers to so-called home pianos , which are reminiscent of acoustic pianos in their design and are equipped with speaker systems. But children's instruments , portable pianos and digital grand pianos are also listed as digital pianos. They differ in their sound generation, their form, their range of functions and, above all, in the quality of the keyboard, amplifier and speakers. The functions range from the different quantity of sounds, their combination ( split and layer functions ) and associated effects to metronome , scales and moods , the range of sequencer and audio recorders to learning functions and the sound settings mentioned on a technical level.

Digital pianos and their sounds

When selecting sounds, the focus is understandably on keyboard instruments and, above all, on piano sounds . There are usually various concert grand pianos and other acoustic pianos ( upright , jazz piano ) to choose from. There are also harpsichords , celesta and organ as well as the aforementioned electric pianos . Some models also offer strings , choir or synthetic pad sounds, which are often placed under the piano sound as an additional timbre. Bass sounds are also very popular, for example to give the left hand more foundation or to play along with a recorded bass line. Some models also have drum sounds or complete rhythms available for this purpose.

Digital pianos for beginners and professionals at session

Portable pianos are popular entry-level models because they are reduced to the basic functions for the sake of portability, but fit well into the living room furniture. Unfortunately, this reduction often affects playability, as high-quality hammer mechanisms cannot fit into the compact housings. But here too there are pianos that do both justice. digital grand piano actually have the same keyboards as concert grand pianos. In addition, sophisticated amplifier and loudspeaker systems in conjunction with the sound generation and cover ensure authentic concert grand sound with professional standards.
