The two terms describe the same product: a small tube that the guitarist slips over a finger of the fretting hand. With a slide, the guitarist glides over the fretboard or the strings of the guitar. In the past, simple bottlenecks were used for this. When playing with a slide or bottleneck, the frets of the guitar become more or less redundant. By "sliding" on the guitar strings, smooth transitions between notes are created, producing the typical singing, slightly warbling tone. This tonal effect is often used in the country or blues genres. Slides and bottlenecks are available in different materials; the most common are brass, steel, glass and ceramic.
